History

Dowell Springs is located off Middlebrook Pike, a major east-west thoroughfare. Middlebrook Pike was named after an 1845 antebellum home and estate located and still standing along Middlebrook Pike. This private residence was built in 1845 by Gideon Morgan Hazen, and is one of the oldest existing frame residences in Knoxville. The property also includes a small Gothic Revival spring house. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
